âWow!â
âI told you.â Leigh grinned at Hosea.
âThis is fantastic!â Hosea forked up another bite of the cake and made a manful effort not to smack his lips when he finished chewing. âWho made it?â
âAngela.â
Hoseaâs hand froze in midair. He recovered quickly and finished lifting the next bite of cake to his mouthâbut not quickly enough. Leigh had noticed. Those doctorâs eyes of hers never missed a thing. To her credit she didnât so much as smile.
Hosea laid down his fork and poured cream into his cup of coffee. âI guess I missed her.â He fought back the urge to jump up and run out to the parking lot to see if she was still there. âI didnât think she was here.â
âShe wasnât. I brought the cake for her.â
âI see.â He couldnât quite keep the disappointment from his voice.
Leigh locked her gaze on his. âSheâs a wonderful cook. I have wild dreams of hiring her when Phil and I get rich and can afford someone of her talent.â
âTalent? Whose talent? In what area? Who are we hiring?â Phil slid a paper plate with a brownie on it onto the table, and dropped into the chair beside Leigh.
âAngela, hon. To do our cooking and baking.â Leigh smiled and slid a piece of the hazelnut torte she had been saving toward him. âYou might want to trade that brownie in for this.â
âYou angel!â Phil shoved the brownie aside and kissed Leighâs cheek. âJeff Archer waylaid me with a question, and by the time I got to the dessert table the cake was all gone.â He took a bite, licked a spot of icing from his lip, and grinned. âYep! Just as delicious as I expected. Itâs a good thing Angela isnât interested in marriage orâ Ow!â
âOhâ¦Iâm sorry.â Leigh gave Phil a look that could have withered a tree. âWas that your foot?â
âIt used to be.â Phil shot her a what-was-that-for? glance and leaned down to rub his foot.
Hosea chuckled.
âPastor Stevens?â
He lifted his head and looked up at Walter Foster.
âSorry to interrupt, but itâs that time.â
âOkay. Thanks, Allen. Iâll be right there.â
Hosea wiped his mouth with his napkin, rose to his feet, then leaned across the table and lowered his voice so only Leigh could hear him. âItâs all in Godâs hands, Leigh. But itâs nice to know I have an ally. Still, you donât have to maim the manâI donât discourage easily.â
Leighâs mouth gaped open.
Hosea gave her a broad wink, then turned and walked to the front of the room to open the eveningâs special program.
